One of the temples we saw in Ayuthaya had been rebuilt a few times, so the outside was very modern looking. Inside they had a buddha statue that hadn't been destroyed/melted down when the Burmese invaded what at the time was the Thai capital. It was huge, and it was gold, and it was in the old style - note the ornate clothing. Cool stuff.
An adjoining temple had another statue, but it was stone and very mellow.

Surely it's not solid gold? Just a gold-plated Budha? Did you bite it to make sure?
the internet says its gold-plated, and the internet it always right.
there actually is a solid gold buddha at wat traimit - it's literally tons of solid gold.
gold is big here - people get each other wedding rings of such purity that they bend and twist after a year or two, and have to be reworked to keep their shape. i've read stories about guys who have tried to get their local wife a less-pure gold for the ring, though - it apparently doesn't go over very well. something about 'cheap' and 'don't really love me'. anyway, after 11 years of wearing it, i'm glad mine is platinum - it's not going to bend anytime soon, unless someone squishes me in a big metal press like in terminator.
