"Dragon Eye" fruit

One of our favorite things about Southeast Asia is the wonderful food - particularly the fresh tropical fruit.  This morning at breakfast they has a pleasant surprise - "dragon eye" fruit from Thailand!  As you can see here - "dragon eye" fruit is small, and when you open the thin shell, it's like a lychee inside.  Under the sweet white flesh, there is a solid black pit - if you eat away half the flesh, the pit looks like the middle of an eye - a dragon eye.

According to Sam, though, you can't eat too many in one sitting, because dragon eye fruit is "hot".  Chinese foods are divided into "cold" and "hot" (yin and yang), and you need to balance them out.  Hot or not, they sure were tasty!
