Cicadas are sassy

Recently (last few weeks) we've been hearing significant noise at night.  At first we thought there was a home business in the neighborhood that ran machines in the evening and the early morning.  Then we came to realize the noises we heard... weren't man made.  (cue scary music)

Now that we know the noises are from little bugs, it's a rather pleasant sound.  Here's a picture of a cicada that dropped out of a tree and was on its back as we walked past.  We righted him (her?) and were on our way.  But not before we got a picture.

Anyhow - even though cicadas are sassy, the noise they make is also kind of soothing once you get used to it.  Nowadays it helps put me to sleep.

(and I once ate pickled cicadas in Taiwan courtesy of Mr. Han - although those didn't have wings yet - in mainland China they grab them as they're crawling up the tree after they emerge from the ground and before their wings emerge, and pickle them.  Yes, they taste like chicken)
